Hilla Havkin’s career in illustration started when she returned to Israel after her training as an architect at the Politecnico di Milano. Since the early 1980s her large body of work has focused on: illustrating children’s books, editorial illustration and zoological and botanical scientific illustration. Since 2003 she has also been creating imagery for high quality stationery and greeting cards.
Over the years, Hilla has worked with many of the best-loved Israeli children’s book authors. Many of these books have become best sellers.
Hilla’s unique style, the finely-honed precise and delicate watercolor technique are immediately recognizable. Hilla has a subtle sense of humor and is known for taking her characters from their familiar surroundings to unexpected situations and scenarios in a surprising but always cheerful and detailed style.
Perhaps most satisfying to her young audience, Hilla frequently embeds little surprises in the pictures, to be found by the curious and inquisitive readers who search the fine detail of the scenery. So, even after many readings of the same book, a child may discover yet another unforeseen treasure in a loved and well-read book. This, combined with the fantastic imagery, color, and miniature-like detail, make her books unforgettable.
To date, she has well over 140 books published with her illustrations by leading publishers in Israel, while also accepting private commissions on rare occasions. For the past 5 years, Hilla has also been creating illustrations for Artalic, an exceptionally high-quality stationery line in Israel. Hilla’s illustrations, distributed under the name “Hillarious”, are offered for licensing to stationery, toys, children’s clothing and home décor manufacturers.
Hilla shares her house, with a small magical garden, on the outskirts of Tel Aviv, with her husband and two cats, and has two adult daughters.
